What Does a Health and Wellness Coach Do?
Are you looking for guidance and support to improve your health? From medical doctors to personal trainers, there are many professionals to consider. Health and Wellness Coaches (HWCs) offer a unique and empowering approach to help you create lasting change.
Unlike other health professionals who often prescribe specific solutions, HWCs focus on helping you discover what works best for your unique circumstances. They believe that you are the expert on your own life and guide you to create realistic and meaningful goals using your strengths and experiences.
HWCs are well-versed in physical, mental, social, and other areas of wellness, but they are not therapists or doctors. If you or someone you know needs urgent care, it’s important to address those needs first. Once you’re ready, an HWC can be an invaluable partner in achieving sustainable, positive changes.
Now that you understand the role of a Health and Wellness Coach, let’s dive into what you can expect from the coaching experience.
What to Expect from Health and Wellness Coaching
If you’ve been curious about Health and Wellness Coaching, you might wonder: What does the process look like? Let’s walk through the structure of coaching sessions so you know exactly what to expect.
The first session
Before your first session, you’ll receive two important documents:
The Coaching Agreement, which outlines responsibilities, cancellation policies, and contact details.
The Wellness Assessment, a tool to help you evaluate your current state of wellness across several areas.
During the session, your coach will review the assessment with you, discuss your strengths and values, and work with you to identify initial focus areas. This is also a great time to learn about your coach’s qualifications and background.
The second session
In this session, you’ll create a personalized Wellness Vision—a big-picture statement of your ideal life. This vision helps identify key focus areas, from which you’ll set meaningful goals. Your coach will then guide you in designing actionable steps to make those goals a reality, one week at a time (see the illustration below from evokept.com for a visual).
Ongoing Sessions
Subsequent sessions are dedicated to reviewing your progress, refining goals, and overcoming challenges. These sessions provide accountability and support as you integrate new habits into your daily life.
