If you’re familiar with the general state of health in the U.S., you might know that the top two leading causes of death are cardiovascular (heart) disease and cancer (CDC, 2023). What many people don’t realize is that a medical condition called Metabolic Syndrome significantly contributes to these diseases, as well as other leading causes of death like stroke (#5) and diabetes (#8).

So, what is Metabolic Syndrome? It’s a combination of three or more independent symptoms that may not seem concerning on their own but, when combined, can be dangerous—or even deadly. The good news? These symptoms are often reversible with the right knowledge and action. Let’s explore what they are and how you can reduce your risk.

The Symptoms of Metabolic Syndrome

To diagnose Metabolic Syndrome, medical providers look for the presence of at least three or more of the following symptoms:

  1. Large Waist Circumference

    • Details: Men: 40+ inches; Women: 35+ inches

    • How to Check: Use a flexible tape measure around your belly button to measure your waist.

  2. High Triglycerides

    • Details: 150+ mg/dL or currently taking medication to lower triglycerides

    • How to Check: A blood test is required.

  3. Low HDL ("Good") Cholesterol

    • Details: Men: Less than 40 mg/dL; Women: Less than 50 mg/dL

    • How to Check: A blood test is required.

  4. High Blood Pressure

    • Details: 130/85 mmHg or higher, or taking medication for high blood pressure

    • How to Check: Get your blood pressure checked at a pharmacy or during an annual check-up.

  5. High Fasting Blood Sugar

    • Details: 100+ mg/dL or taking medication for high blood glucose

    • How to Check: A blood test is required.

The Challenge and Opportunity

The bad news: These symptoms are often silent, meaning they don’t cause noticeable signs until they lead to serious health problems. As a result, approximately 34% of U.S. adults have Metabolic Syndrome without knowing it.

The good news: While the symptoms may not be obvious, they are often reversible or manageable with lifestyle changes. Proven strategies include:

  • Regular exercise

  • Weight loss

  • A balanced, varied diet

  • Consistent sleep patterns

  • Stress management

  • Quitting smoking

  • Taking medications as prescribed by your doctor

How Health Coaching Can Help

Making lifestyle changes is a powerful way to reverse Metabolic Syndrome when symptoms are caught early. However, knowing where to start and staying motivated can feel overwhelming. That’s where health coaching comes in.

Health coaches work with you to:

  • Identify which changes to focus on first

  • Set realistic, personalized goals

  • Create actionable plans

  • Provide motivation and accountability to maintain new habits

Preventative care is not only less expensive but also far less painful than treating serious diseases down the road. Investing in yourself now through small, meaningful steps can lead to big rewards for your future health.
